Summer 2010 Players Academy Program

The 2010 Players Academy Program will be held from July 5th - July 30, 2010 from 8 a.m. ; 4 p.m. Monday-Friday at Bishop McNarmara High School 6800 Marlboro Pike Forestville, MD 20747-3270.

This summer's musical theater production introduces students to the History of African American Music and Steppin' on College Campuses. The students will rotate classes each day. Every Friday there will be a guest lecturer to talk about the importance of education while pursuing the arts. The culminating performance is titled, "Steppin' It Ip!"

The cost of the four-week program is $300 with a limited number of scholarships available. In addition, all prospective Academy Players must audition. Those selected must pay for the program no later than June 21, 2010.

During the course of the program, students will learn how to identify the patterns and metaphors in poetry by writing and performing influential literary works. Students will explore through a video presentation how the Fisk Jubilee Singers acquainted all of America with African-American spirituals. In addition to the practicum experience, students are required to participate in daily lectures on topics including networking strategies, the history of call and response, and the Blues.

The Players Academy will culminate with an original theatrical production titled, "Steppin' It Up".
